The first step towards earning a teaching degree is taking classes to become knowledgeable in a field you want to teach. As an undergraduate education major, these classes often take two or three years to complete. If you want to teach at the university level, you may have to spend much more time becoming an expert in your field in order to teach. The second step is learning how to express yourself to students in a way that helps them learn. The methods used to learn this second step vary based on the age group of your future students. This part of your teaching degree often takes place outside of a university classroom when you are required to spend a number of hours student teaching. Every future teacher needs to experience what it is like to teach a number of students in a safe environment with a professional teachers acting as a guide.
